Cheetah Sarah, the Swiftest Creature on Earth, Bids Farewell

In a world where records are often broken and surpassed, one record has stood the test of time - the fastest 100-meter dash ever run. That record belongs to Sarah the cheetah, who clocked a remarkable time of 5.95 seconds in a feat captured by our website's magazine in 2012.

During that historic moment, Sarah was radar-timed at up to 61 miles (98 kilometers) an hour, leaving Olympian Usain Bolt's world record of 9.58 seconds looking positively stodgy by comparison. This record-breaking sprint occurred on a USA Track & Field-certified course established by the zoo.

Sadly, Sarah the cheetah was euthanized this week at the Cincinnati Zoo. She was 15 years old at the time of her death. Cheetahs, on average, have an lifespan of eight to twelve years.

The population of cheetahs has dwindled from about 100,000 in 1900 to an estimated 9,000 to 12,000 individuals today. Smaller cheetah populations in Iran and northwestern Africa are categorized as critically endangered. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the cheetah species as vulnerable to extinction.

The main threats to cheetah survival in the wild are widespread loss of prey and habitat. Cheetahs live primarily in Africa and Iran.

Cheetahs are unique creatures, with a flexible spine that enables a 22-foot stride and hard, cleat-like claws for traction while running. They are indeed the epitome of speed and agility.

As we bid farewell to Sarah, it's important to remember the plight of her kind in the wild. If you're interested in learning more about conservation efforts, consider following Christine Dell'Amore on Twitter and Google.
