Fast-Moving Equine Powerhouse Stampedes Through Racecourse

Do horses get a special edge in horse racing, akin to a home field advantage in sports? You betcha! In various sports, we've seen strange occurrences - like that infamous incident with the air conditioning in the visitor's locker room at the old Boston Garden, or the mysterious snow plow in New England only for the home team. Even the friendly confines of Wrigley Field have been known to give a boost to the Cubs (but let's not get Chicagoans riled up).
In the realm of Thoroughbred racing, the answer is a resounding yes. These steeds have their very own "home" track where they train predominantly, and they seem to appreciate the comfort of their own stall. Sure, some trainers will tell you that no place compares for every horse.
On occasion, trainers have the luck of the draw with a Thoroughbred that carries its track with it wherever it goes. These horses don't seem to be flustered by travel and fill their appetite for victory regardless of the surface or circumstances.
Raging Torrent is one such horse, leaving his carry-on behind for a full-sized Samsonite. Since May 4, 2024, this son of Maximus Mischief has dominated on six occasions across five diverse tracks in seven starts. This streak of success, spanning across the U.S. coasts, Kentucky, and Dubai, is nothing short of impressive.
"He travels as well as any horse I've ever been around," says trainer-turned-tour-guide Doug O'Neill. "His ability to maintain his appetite on the road is one of the things that helps him perform at a high level."
Did You Know?
- Horses trained on surfaces that mimic race-day conditions are more likely to perform well due to better adaptation to the track's challenges[3].
- The stall from which a horse starts can influence its race, with some tracks having biases favoring horses drawn in specific positions[1][2].
- Jockeys and trainers who frequently compete at a particular track may have deeper knowledge of its nuances, aiding them in making better strategic decisions during races[2][3].
The Raging Torrent world tour began at Churchill Downs with a front-running win at seven furlongs. On June 30, another gate-to-wire victory emerged in the Maxfield Stakes, also at Churchill. In late August, O'Neill's charge claimed its first graded stakes win in the Pat O'Brien at historic Del Mar. A rail draw in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Del Mar put an end to the win streak in early November, but a quick trip up to Santa Anita saw the horse earn grade 1 glory in the Malibu Stakes on December 26.
The successful 2024 season provided Team O'Neill with the confidence to venture to Dubai for the Godolphin Mile at Meydan Race Course on April 5, 2025. Once again, the horse responded with a powerful victory against runners from all over the world. Back in the States, Raging Torrent breezed through customs with its track still intact, causing a stir in the racing world with an upset win in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Saratoga on June 7.
"We were very concerned about shipping East and facing such a tough field after coming back from Dubai," says the Southern California-based O'Neill. "Leading up to the race, he gave us every indication he was fully recovered from his trip overseas and was in fact asking to compete at a high level."
Facing two of the top older male runners in the United States, Raging Torrent was an underdog in the Met Mile, going off at odds of 8 to 1. Breaking alertly, as has become his signature, the horse immediately assumed the lead and never looked back. Under the skillful riding of Frankie Dettori, the versatile Raging Torrent simply outran its opponents and cruised to a 2.5-length victory.
"The Met Mile was an amazing performance, and we couldn't be more proud," says O'Neill. "His owners have given us the freedom to campaign him at different tracks, which I am very thankful for. My incredible team, led by Leandro Mora, has played a significant role in our success story."
In fourteen career starts, Raging Torrent has now won seven times with one second and two third-place finishes. Total career earnings for this powerhouse of a horse now stand at an impressive $1,797,400. The force is currently back in California, with its next start yet to be determined.
In the horse-racing world, Raging Torrent, trained by Doug O'Neill, has shown a remarkable ability to perform at a high level across diverse tracks, including Churchill Downs, Del Mar, and the Meydan Race Course in Dubai. This Tough performer even showcased its prowess in the prestigious Met Mile at Saratoga, defeating top older runners in the United States.
Raging Torrent's global success reveals how some thoroughbreds can carry their comfort zones with them, thriving on various tracks despite travel and different conditions, much like how athletes in sports can have home field advantages.
