Farmers Across Germany Voice Concerns Over Agricultural Diesel Plans

Farmers in various regions, including Lower Saxony's Uelzen and Harburg, joined forces on Monday, protesting against the German government's plans to alter agricultural diesel regulations. Tractor convoys clogged roads in several districts, causing significant disruptions and leading to administrative offense proceedings due to the vehicles' restricted highway usage.

Serious traffic delays ensued when around 100 farmers in the Lüneburg district parked their tractors on the B216 federal highway, disrupting traffic for two hours. In Harburg, a separate convoy slowed traffic on highway 39, with police overseers to ensure the tractor procession remained secure. The district of Harburg was likewise affected.

The farmers' main concern lay in the German government's intention to curtail tax breaks on agricultural diesel. According to the Green politician and Federal Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir, more savings needed to be found following the Federal Constitutional Court's budget ruling. However, farmers felt that these proposed cuts disproportionately burdened them, as they primarily utilized rural paths rather than highways.

Similar protests erupted in Osnabrück, where affected farmers staged a demonstration involving over 40 tractors and four automobiles, congesting city centers and obstructing traffic. While some protesters demonstrated in Bohmte and East Frisia, no significant blockages occurred.

Farmers in Berlin united under the German Farmers' Association's banner, rallying at the Brandenburg Gate under the slogan "Too much is too much." Over 1,500 farmers from Lower Saxony representing various regions participated in the event, accompanied by around 350 tractors.
