A Fresh Chapter for Sandro Wagner: Heading to FC Augsburg as the New Head Coach
Farewell wish extended: Nagelsmann bids adieu to Sandro Wagner in a calm manner
Julian Nagelsmann, the national team coach, has bid farewell to his departing assistant, Sandro Wagner, in a modest manner. "He did a splendid job and pretty much met all the needs we had in the coaching team," Nagelsmann said before the third-place match against France in the Nations League (3:00 PM/RTL and DAZN).
Wagner is stepping down from the German Football Association (DFB) after the match and will take charge of FC Augsburg for the first time in the Bundesliga. "I wish him luck," Nagelsmann shared, emphasizing that he is excited about Wagner's comfort and contentment in this new role. "That sets the stage for success," he added.
A Return to His Former Club
If Wagner manages to make FC Augsburg play appealing football, "I'll enjoy watching it too," the national team coach mentioned. Wagner was once associated with the Bavarian Swabians as a player and coach, and the team shared earlier that Benjamin Hübner will take over his position at the DFB.
A Promising New Era at FC Augsburg
Wagner joined the DFB in the summer of 2023 as an assistant to Hannes Wolf with the U20 team. He worked as a striker coach in the youth teams before moving to the senior national team. He joined forces with sports director Rudi Völler and Wolf following the separation from national team coach Hansi Flick. Wagner, now departing at his request, will start his first coach role at the top tier, having demonstrated his skills in a promising coaching journey that includes a successful career as a player with clubs like Bayern Munich, Werder Bremen, Hoffenheim, and Hertha Berlin.
FC Augsburg has been a consistent presence in the Bundesliga since gaining promotion in 2011, and Wagner's modern, possession-oriented style is likely to breathe new life into the team, aligning well with Augsburg's vision of developing a clear and progressive football philosophy. Wagner's contract until 2028 shows a long-term commitment to the club, and his ambition to lead a Bundesliga team sees an ideal environment at Augsburg to actualize this goal.
Sandro Wagner's return to FC Augsburg as head coach might offer him an opportunity to showcase his football skills, given his past association with the club. His modern, possession-oriented style could inject new life into the team, aligning with Augsburg's vision of developing a progressive football philosophy.
