Farewell to the Crucial Figure: Borussia Düsseldorf Bids Adieu
Borussia Düsseldorf Advances to Champions League Final, Secures German TTBL Title Showdown
Timo Boll, the 44-year-old table tennis veteran, played his final home game for Borussia Düsseldorf in an electrifying atmosphere, leading the team to a 3-1 victory in the Champions League semi-final. This win sets up a showdown with 1. FC Saarbrücken in the final, which will take place the day after the semi-final win, although the exact date and venue are yet to be announced.
In the playoff semi-finals of the table tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) on Sunday, April 27th, Timo Boll was the decisive player for Borussia, avenging his loss to Filip Zeljko in Bad Königshofen with a 3-2 win in the return leg. The Borussians secured the deciding doubles match with the pairing of Timo Boll and Anton Källberg, who had only played once this season together.
Meanwhile, Dang Qui from Düsseldorf repeated his win from the first leg against Bastian Steger, while Jin Ueda from TSV Bad Königshofen won two games and shared the "Man of the Match" title with Timo Boll. The Königshofen pair of Bastian Steger and Martin Allegro, who led the TTBL doubles ranking with a 5:0 record, were slight favorites, but the Borussians managed to pull through.
Regarding the German championship, the TTBL has introduced a new "Final Four" format starting from the 2025/26 season. This event will be held centrally on May 30-31, 2026, at the Süwag Energie ARENA in Frankfurt, featuring the four best teams from the main round. The semi-finals and final will be played consecutively on a central court, offering fans an intense and focused championship conclusion.
With Timo Boll's retirement, he has taken on a role as brand ambassador for Borussia Dortmund, completing an internship to familiarize himself with the club. However, he remains a key figure for Borussia Düsseldorf, helping them strive to reclaim the German TTBL title after years dominated by teams like Saarbrücken and Ochsenhausen.
Borussia's final will take place on June 15 in Frankfurt against TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen. Head coach Danny Heister commended Timo Boll, stating it was incredible that he won his singles and the doubles in his final home game. Heister also praised his team's performance, describing it as a very good team effort and a lot of hard work. The series between Borussia and TSV Bad Königshofen is currently "Best of three", with Borussia leading 2:0 after two matches.
