"Farewell to Samuele (19 yrs), who tragically passed away following a fall at high speed (70 km/h)"
In a heartbreaking turn of events, the cycling community is mourning the loss of 19-year-old Samuele Privitera, who died in a crash during the first stage of the Giro Ciclistico della Valle d'Aosta - Mont Blanc in northwestern Italy.
The incident occurred on an uneven road approximately 35 kilometers from the finish line in Aosta. Privitera, a member of the junior team of Hagens Berman Arua, a WorldTour team currently competing in the Tour de France, was reportedly traveling at almost 70 km/h when the accident happened.
Upon the crash, Privitera suffered severe head injuries and cardiac arrest, according to media reports. Despite immediate revival efforts by medical staff following the race, he later passed away at Parini Hospital in Aosta.
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has expressed its condolences, with President David Lappartient stating, "Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates, and all those who supported him. Samuel's loss is felt throughout the cycling community."
In respect to Privitera, the organizers of the Giro Ciclistico della Valle d'Aosta - Mont Blanc have canceled the second stage, scheduled for Thursday, and will hold a minute of silence before the resumption of the race on Friday. There will be no official ceremonies during the resumption, and teams participating in the race can decide whether to continue or end the race prematurely.
The causes of cycling accidents involving uneven roads and high speeds are complex, with factors such as potholes, debris, reduced reaction time, increased impact severity, driver negligence, and rider vulnerability all playing a role.
The authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Privitera's accident. The race, the 61st edition of the Giro Ciclistico della Valle d'Aosta - Mont Blanc, will resume on Friday, with the first section neutralized in honor of Privitera.
It is important to note that this tragedy is not related to the sudden dog bite incident involving a ski star during training. Our thoughts remain with Privitera's family, friends, and the cycling community during this difficult time.
