AfD Faction's Battle for Bundestag Vice President Position: Five Candidates Vying

- Far-right political group, AfD, seeks to gain seats in the federal parliament, Bundestag, with five potential candidates in contention.

Gear up for some political drama, folks! The AfD faction is about to shake things up in the Bundestag as they select a contender for the Vice President position, a meeting that's gonna go down on Monday. A spokesperson confirmed that at least five dudes—Malte Kaufmann, Michael Kaufmann (no relation), Jochen Haug, Gerold Otten, and Karsten Hilse—have thrown their hats in the ring. The candidates will reportedly huddle up before the meeting to decide who'll take the plunge as the internal nominee. With the freshly formed Bundestag convening on Tuesday, this is one race that's heating up!

No AfD VP yet in the Books

You might already know this, but the AfD is the second-largest faction in Germany's parliament following the February 23 federal election. Ever since they made their debut in the Bundestag back in 2017, they've yet to hold a position in the parliamentary presidency. Sadly, none of their Vice President candidates have garnered the required majority votes so far.

CDU chairman Friedrich Merz had some choice words for the situation at the end of February. In an interview, he stated, "This office is a state office," and he wasn't going to recommend any AfD member for a state position. He made these comments during a chat with the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung."

  • AfD
  • Bundestag
  • Berlin
  • Michael Kaufmann
  • Karsten Hilse
  • Gerold Otten (Previously ran for the position but didn't secure it)
  • CDU (Christian Democratic Union)

The Commission, in light of the ongoing political drama surrounding the AfD faction's battle for the Vice President position in the Bundestag, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, particularly in Berlin. This comes as none of the AfD's Vice President candidates, including Michael Kaufmann, Karsten Hilse, and Gerold Otten (who previously ran for the position), have garnered the required majority votes, with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) expressing reservations about supporting an AfD member for a state position.
