In the upcoming Champions League match between FC Chelsea and FC Bayern, one player will undoubtedly face a hostile reception from the home crowd. Marc Cucurella, the Chelsea defender, has become a symbol of controversy for Bayern fans, dating back to the bitter DFB exit in the Euro Cup quarter-finals in 2024.

During the game, Cucurella was met with loud boos from the Bayern faithful, a reaction that has persisted since the controversial quarter-final. The dislike stems from a moment in the match when Cucurella blocked a potential goal from Jamal Musiala in the penalty area, a decision that sparked controversy when Spanish referee José Maria Sanchez Martinez did not award a penalty.

The UEFA admitted after last year's European Championship that the decision not to award a penalty was a mistake. However, for Bayern fans, this mistake did not seem to make much difference on Wednesday night. Every time Cucurella touched the ball, he was booed and jeered by the home crowd. The boos reached their peak during a free kick awarded against Cucurella, with Michael Ballack, a DAZN expert, commenting that half the stadium jumped up when the decision was announced.

The match at the Allianz Arena was not just about sports. The controversy surrounding Cucurella has followed him to Germany, with the player consistently booed since the 2024 Euro Cup quarter-final. The boos were not limited to the game itself, with Cucurella also being booed during warm-up and the Nations League final tournament in June 2025.

Michael Ballack, a former German international, had massive technical issues with DAZN's broadcast during the match, adding to the tension in the air. Despite the hostile atmosphere, Cucurella and Chelsea will be looking to put the past behind them and focus on the task at hand - securing a victory against Bayern in the Champions League.

It remains to be seen how Cucurella will cope with the hostile reception from the Bayern fans, but one thing is certain - the controversy surrounding his performance in the 2024 Euro Cup quarter-finals will continue to cast a shadow over him as he prepares for this crucial Champions League match.
