One America News Network (OAN) Apologizes for Using AI-Generated Content

One America News Network (OAN) has found itself in hot water after using AI-generated images during a segment on The Matt Gaetz Show in August 2025. The images, which were displayed as part of B-roll footage while discussing an increase in female military recruits, were generated using Elon Musk's Grok AI.

The network initially did not disclose that the images were AI-generated, leading to questions about their authenticity. However, after the incident became public, Matt Gaetz apologized on air, admitting the use of AI-generated images was a mistake and stating, "We'll use better judgment going forward."

An OAN spokesperson confirmed that the images violated the network's internal policies, which have since been tightened. Management also took additional actions and implemented an on-air correction to address the issue.

Before the apology, OAN did not respond to inquiries about its policy on AI-generated content.

OAN's History and Controversies

OAN was launched in 2013 and initially positioned itself as a conservative alternative to mainstream news outlets. However, during Trump's first administration, the network transformed into a conspiracy-heavy, MAGA-boosting outlet.

This shift has not been without controversy. In 2020, OAN promoted Trump's election lies, leading to defamation lawsuits from Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic. The network has settled multiple such lawsuits, but still faces a separate defamation lawsuit from Dominion Voting Systems.

In 2022, DirecTV dropped OAN, leading to a decrease in its viewership and revenue. Despite this, Kari Lake, Trump's pick to run a hollowed-out Voice of America, claimed that OAN will provide "newsfeed services" to VOA and other US-funded international broadcasters.

The Defense Department did not provide the images that were displayed during the discussion, and small watermarks in the bottom corners of the images suggested they were AI-generated. CNN asked OAN whether its staff generated the photos and if the network has any policy regarding AI-generated content, but OAN did not respond.

The Pentagon has told Fox News the same figures about female recruitment, although official detailed data has not been released. The Defense Department spokeswoman Kingsley Wilson discussed an alleged increase in female military recruits on OAN.
