Diego Simeone, the manager of Atletico Madrid, found himself at the centre of a heated incident during Wednesday night's game against Liverpool. Simeone was shown a red card following an altercation with a member of the Anfield crowd after Liverpool's third goal.

The incident seemed to stem from an altercation with a Liverpool supporter named Jonathan Poulter, who has a history of provocative and offensive behaviour. In 2015, Poulter was given a three-year football banning order after an incident involving a banner at a Steven Gerrard home game.

Poulter alleges that Simeone's assistant manager spat at him during the game, a claim that has not been verified. Simeone, however, expressed his frustration, stating that he was insulted throughout the game from behind the bench. He also claimed that he was not justified in his reaction but felt provoked by the crowd's behaviour.

Simeone refused to comment on whether the crowd's comments referenced his nationality, choosing instead to focus on the need for Liverpool to improve the behaviour of their fans. Liverpool have not commented on the incident involving Poulter and Simeone.

The Liverpool Echo reported on the incident, and a video surfaced at full-time showing an individual making gestures towards the Atleti bench during the game. The individual in the video is believed to be responsible for the incident that led to Simeone's red card.

Poulter sought to make amends with the victim in the 2015 incident, apologizing to Mr. Higham at the first home game of the 2015/16 season. However, this latest incident has once again brought his behaviour into question.

Liverpool have a history of dealing with such incidents, having previously banned Poulter from Anfield between 2015 and 2018 due to insults, including an incident where he abused another fan attending the match with his disabled wife.

Simeone walked out of his post-match press conference after repeated questions about the red card incident, choosing instead to focus on the game itself and Atletico's performance. The incident is likely to cast a shadow over the remainder of the Champions League tie.
