Family Dispute Over Late Billionaire Kapoor's Car Empire: Mother versus Sister
In the heart of India's bustling automotive industry, a fierce battle is ongoing for the empire of the late billionaire Sanjay Kapur, founder of Sona Comstar. At the centre of this dispute are Sanjay Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, the company's directors, and his sister.
Rani Kapur has accused the firm's management of attempting to seize the family business. She claims that her husband, the company's founder, named her as the sole heir to Sanjay Kapur's fortune and the main shareholder of the Sona Group. However, according to company records, Rani Kapur officially has not held shares since 2019.
Rani Kapur alleges that she was forced to sign questionable documents while mourning her son's death. She believes she was denied access to bank accounts and has been denied her rightful position in the company.
Sanjay Kapur's sister is also involved in the dispute, and reports from the "Daily Mirror" suggest that she has not spoken to her brother for over four years.
The current control of Sona Comstar is held largely by the promoter entity Aureus Investments Private Limited (AIPL), which owns about 28.02% of the company, with public shareholding at 71.98%. After Sanjay Kapur's sudden death in June 2025, the company's board proceeded with key appointments. Priya Sachdev Kapur, Sunjay’s widow, was appointed as a Non-Executive Director, nominated by Aureus Investments Pvt Ltd, and Jeffrey Mark Overly was named Chairman of the Board.
The board has rejected Rani Kapur’s claims that she was forced to sign critical documents or that the AGM should be deferred, stating that she is not a shareholder and lacks legal standing to delay company decisions. They emphasize that all regulatory protocols and corporate governance norms were followed during the AGM held on July 25, 2025.
As the legal and family feud continues, it is clear that the company governance, as of the latest updates, is under the control of the board appointed by the promoter entity AIPL, with Priya Sachdev Kapur acting as a key family representative on the board and Jeffrey Mark Overly as chairman.
