Family rescued from Breitenberg in icy temperatures - Family and dog rescued from freezing mountain after missing last cable car
A family of three, including a young child and their dog, was rescued from Breitenberg mountain in Pfronten after missing the last cable car down. Overnight temperatures plunged to minus twelve degrees Celsius, leaving them stranded in freezing conditions.
The rescue operation was led by Bergwacht Pfronten, a local mountain rescue team based in the Bavarian town of Pfronten im Ostallgäu.
The family became stranded after failing to catch the final cable car descent from Breitenberg. With temperatures dropping sharply, the young child faced a high risk of hypothermia.
Bergwacht Pfronten launched a rapid response, deploying three mountain rescue specialists alongside cable car staff. To reach the group quickly, rescuers used a gondola, a snowcat, and an all-terrain vehicle. All four individuals—three family members and their dog—were safely brought down to the valley. Despite the successful rescue, they showed early signs of hypothermia due to the extreme cold.
The family will now cover the costs of the operation, including fees for Bergwacht Pfronten and the cable car service. The rescue highlights the risks of being unprepared in alpine conditions, especially during sudden temperature drops.
