Fall Sports Season of Hellgate in 2023-24 Draws to a Conclusion
Hellgate Knights Shine in 2023 Sports Season
The Hellgate Knights, the athletic powerhouse of Missoula, Montana, had another successful year in the 2023 season. Across various sports, the Knights' teams and individual athletes showcased their skills and determination, reaching new heights and setting records.
In the world of volleyball, the team made a strong start, winning a tournament in Bozeman and defeating Missoula Big Sky early in the season. Junior setter Moana Massey led the team in sets, and junior libero Morgan Meissner excelled in digs.
The Hellgate men's soccer team, taking the third seed out of the West into the post-season tournament, scored an impressive 76 goals in the regular season and allowed just 11. Their remarkable run ended in the semifinals against Billings West. However, they made history by defeating Big Sky 5-1 in the first round of the playoffs.
The women's soccer team, on the other hand, qualified for the AA State title game for the first time in school history. They finished their season with a 14-2-1 record and saw Carmen Anderson, bound for Central Washington, break the record for career assists in Class AA with 47.
The cross country teams also had a stellar season. The boys team, led by Wilson Derry who placed 12th in the state meet with a time of 15:59.07, reached the AA State level. The girls team successfully defended their state title, with five runners earning All-State honors and all seven runners placing in the top fifty percent of athletes at the State meet. Senior Stella Diaz led the girls, placing sixth overall with a time of 18:52.48.
The golf teams, both boys and girls, also sent all their athletes to the state tournament. The girls team won the MCPS invitational and placed fourth at the Western AA Divisional tournament. Senior Anna Stensrud, who won three tournaments and finished second at the AA State level, earned an All-State finish and has signed to play golf at the University of Montana.
In football, junior Rylan Davis took the snaps for Hellgate as QB1 in his first year, while Sophomores Parker Link, Vince Paffhausen, and Cooper Hogan led the team offensively.
The Hellgate Knights' golf and cross country teams also achieved impressive results. The boys golf team sent two competitors to the state tournament through individual placement in Divisionals, while the boys cross country team placed fifth at the state meet, with three runners placing in the top-15 to earn All-State honors. The girls cross country team, on the other hand, placed all seven runners in the top fifty percent of athletes at the State meet.
