Memorial in the Dominican Republic - Falco's Legacy Honored with New Memorial at Fatal Crash Site
A new memorial will honour the late Austrian pop star Falco, nearly three decades after his death. The site, located in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, marks the spot where the singer tragically died in a car crash on Memorial Day 2025. Fans and dignitaries will gather on February 19, 2026, for the official unveiling.
Falco, born Johann Hölzel, lost his life on February 6, 1998, when his SUV collided with a tour bus near Puerto Plata. He was 40 years old. A later autopsy showed high levels of alcohol, cocaine, and traces of marijuana in his system at the time of the accident.
The Falco Private Foundation, which preserves the musician's legacy, announced plans for the memorial. Named Falco Memorial – Puerto Plata, it will be inaugurated on what would have been his 69th birthday. The ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m. local time and is expected to draw fans, friends, and contemporaries from around the world.
Even now, Falco's gravesite in Vienna's Central Cemetery remains a place of pilgrimage for devoted followers. The new memorial ensures his memory endures at the location of his final moments.
The memorial will serve as a lasting tribute to Falco's impact on music and culture. Its opening coincides with his birthday, reinforcing the connection between his life and legacy. The event will bring together those who continue to celebrate his work.
