Struggles Continue for Galaxy and Messi: A Nightmare Season in MLS
Failure for Messi, distress for Reus in crushing match result
Take a deep breath, soccer fans! The 2025 Major League Soccer season is reaching new levels of drama as former BVB star Marco Reus and his team, Los Angeles Galaxy, face a major crisis. In the much-anticipated rematch of last year's final, another ex-Bundesliga player stole the spotlight.
After the 7-0 thrashing of Los Angeles by the New York Red Bulls, dating back to May 10, the Galaxy are now living their worst nightmare. It's the team's worst defeat in franchise history, tying their longest winless streak. With three draws and nine losses, they're the worst team in the league. Ouch!
Former Real Madrid and Germany forward, Marco Reus, was subbed off during the 64th minute, trailing 0-4. Fellow ex-Bundesliga stars Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (formerly FC Bayern) and Emil Forsberg (RB Leipzig) each scored twice for New York.
"Today was a terrible game. We were crap from start to finish. It wasn't good," admitted Galaxy coach Greg Vanney after the match. "There were other games where we played well and small details made the difference. Today was different. We need to figure out within our group how we can improve to achieve our goals. One thing we know for sure after tonight is that we need to stick together as a group," he added.
Meanwhile, Inter Miami, with eight-time world footballer Lionel Messi, is also battling hardships. After losing 1-4 to Minnesota United, it marked Messi's worst defeat in the MLS. Despite scoring his fifth goal of the season to bring Miami back into the game at the start of the second half, Miami is currently fourth in the Eastern Conference. They're recovering from a semi-final elimination in the North American Champions Cup to the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Inter coach Javier Mascherano, formerly Messi's teammate at FC Barcelona, is feeling the heat: "If the players are lacking, the responsibility lies entirely with me. Entirely," he admitted. "If the coach doesn't convince them or doesn't convey what he wants, the responsibility lies entirely with the coach."
