Failed Election Entry: Bundestag Exclusion for BSW
Facebook Twitter Whatsapp E-Mail Print Copy Link Despite slight modifications to the initial count, the BSW fails to secure a seat in the German Bundestag.
In a post-election committee meeting in Berlin, the Federal Election Committee announced an increase of 4,277 valid second votes for the Left-wing party BSW, led by Sahra Wagenknecht. However, this was not enough to cross the 5% threshold, with the party recording a final tally of 4.98%.
Privacy The overall result and the distribution of seats in the 21st German Bundestag remained consistent. The CDU/CSU held 28.5% of the votes, the AfD 20.8%, and the SPD 16.4%. The Greens attained 11.6% and the Left 8.8%. The FDP missed the parliament with 4.3%. In terms of seats, this means: CDU/CSU 208, AfD 152, SPD 120, Greens 85, Left 64, and SSW 1.
Vote Corrections Across Several Regions
Not only BSW, but other parties also experienced minor changes in the total number of valid second votes. For instance, the CDU received an additional 1,674 votes, the SPD 840, and the AfD 1,632. Conversely, 121 votes were deducted from the FDP. These revisions are chiefly due to corrections in the preliminary second vote results in Lower Saxony (plus 3,271), Bavaria (plus 932), and Baden-Württemberg (plus 912), as reported by Federal Returning Officer Ruth Brand.
Politics Changes in the vote count were mainly observed in Lower Saxony, Bavaria, and Baden-Württemberg. Brand also highlighted some minor flaws in the election process, such as a delivery of voting materials for Berlin-Pankow in the Trier constituency of Rhineland-Palatinate, resulting in 15 invalid votes.
Accidental Double Voting Incidents
In some federal states, voting materials were mistakenly sent out twice in isolated cases. Immediate measures were taken to prevent double voting, as that could potentially influence the election outcome.
Politics Complaints Filed for Three Cases of Double Voting Despite corrective measures, three cases of double voting were recorded, such as in the Thuringian constituency of Eichsfeld-Nordhausen-Kyffhäuserkreis. In this case, one individual distracted the election officials, enabling another to cast two votes. Similar incidents occurred in Hamburg-Wandsbek and the Saxon constituency of Erzgebirgskreis I. In these three cases, criminal complaints were lodged.
