In the political landscape of Germany, Maximilian Krah, the current lead candidate for the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in the 2024 European elections, finds himself embroiled in a series of controversies.

Krah was elected as the AfD's lead candidate with a significant margin, receiving 65.7% of the delegates' votes at a European party congress in Magdeburg in July 2023. However, his tenure has been marked by suspensions and exclusions due to controversial statements.

The most notable of these statements involves Krah's downplaying of the crimes committed by the SS and his trivialization of their actions in an interview. This has led to a suspension from election campaign activities and his exclusion from the AfD delegation in the European Parliament.

Additionally, a criminal investigation is ongoing against Krah. The Bundestag has lifted his immunity, enabling a search of his offices related to a spy trial involving a former employee suspected of spying for China. Krah has testified as a witness in this case, denying knowledge of the alleged espionage activities.

The investigation is not the only controversy surrounding Krah. There has been increasing criticism of his actions, leading the leaders of the AfD to state that he should no longer appear in the election campaign for the European elections.

Another AfD politician, Petr Bystron, will also not be part of the election campaign. The public prosecutor's office is investigating Bystron for potential bribery.

Right-wing extremism, a term often associated with the AfD, involves a rejection of a democratic state and a desire for a state similar to the one under the Nazis. Right-wing extremists often believe in the superiority of certain groups, such as Germans or Christians, and are often violent, using violence against certain groups and those who think differently.

It's important to note that right-wing populist politicians, like those within the AfD, often do not have solutions that work and spread fear of certain groups to gain support. They often have a negative opinion of people with foreign origins, foreigners, and followers of Islam or Judaism.

The faction called "Identity and Democracy" consists of right-wing populist and right-wing extremist parties. In Germany, there are several right-wing extremist parties, including the AfD.

The European Parliament, the legislative body of the European Union, meets in the cities of Brussels and Strasbourg. The elections for the European Parliament are scheduled for June 2024. Despite the controversies surrounding the lead candidate, Maximilian Krah, it remains to be seen how this will impact the AfD's performance in the upcoming elections.
