Editor's Note: In this feature, we delve into the personal life of pop music legend, Lionel Richie, as he navigated a turbulent period in the 90s. Despite the chaos, his music continued to captivate audiences worldwide.

Many of us know Lionel Richie as the soulful tenor behind iconic hits like "Dancing on the Ceiling," "Hello," and "All Night Long." But did you know that Richie, who has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, almost followed a path that led him to the priesthood? In an interview with "Die Zeit" magazine, Richie revealed his initial aspiration to become a priest but eventually found his calling on the stage.

Fast forward to the 90s, and the singer faced a series of personal crises, including vocal cord problems, the death of his father, a divorce, and emotional turmoil. In the same interview, Richie recounted feeling "completely overwhelmed," as if he were teetering on the brink of a nervous breakdown.

Richie turned to his own music for solace during those dark times. Listening to songs like "Say You, Say Me" became a catharsis for him, as he found himself connecting with the raw emotions he had poured into his lyrics. The songs, originally written for others, took on a new meaning – they became a mirror reflecting his own pain.

In the 21st century, Richie continues to charm audiences during his tours, including the "Say Hello To The Hits" tour in 2025. This worldwide tour will see him perform 27 shows across 16 countries, with five shows planned in Germany – in Cologne, Oberhausen, Hamburg, Berlin, and Munich.

Though Richie has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of his personal struggles in the 90s, his unwavering commitment to his music serves as a testament to his resilience and ability to find comfort in his art. His forthcoming memoir, titled "Truly," may provide further insight into his journey and the role his music has played in helping him weather life's storms.
