Sequel Loses Its Director - 'Face/Off 2' loses director Adam Wingard as Paramount searches for a new vision

The long-awaited sequel to Face/Off has hit a setback after director Adam Wingard left the project. Paramount Pictures confirmed his departure last summer, leaving the film without a helmer. The studio is now searching for a new filmmaker to take over the action-packed follow-up.

Plans for a Face/Off revival first emerged in 2019 when producer Neal Moritz announced a remake. By 2021, the project shifted to a true sequel, with Wingard signed to direct and co-write the script alongside Simon Barrett. The original 1997 film, directed by John Woo, was a major success, earning over $240 million worldwide and an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Editing.

Wingard had previously expressed excitement about the sequel, calling the script strong and comparing it to the original's high-energy style. However, he later moved on to direct the A24 thriller Onslaught, leaving Face/Off 2 in limbo. Paramount has since opened the directing role to other filmmakers, inviting pitches for the project.

It remains uncertain whether John Travolta and Nicolas Cage will return for the sequel. The studio has not yet entered formal talks with any specific directors, though discussions are reportedly underway.

With Wingard's exit, Face/Off 2 now faces delays as Paramount seeks a replacement. The sequel's future depends on finding a director who can match the original's intensity. Until then, fans will have to wait for further updates on casting and production.
