Family Files $6.5 Million Lawsuit Against Montreal Police Over 2024 Shootout

A year after a police shootout in August 2024, the Abdallah family has filed a lawsuit against the Montreal Police Service (SPVM) and the City of Montreal, seeking $6.5 million in compensation for alleged excessive force and negligence. The lawsuit was announced on August 4, 2025 [1][4].

During the incident, Houssam Abdallah, 54, and his son Abdel Rahman Abdallah, 18, were unpacking after a camping trip near their home in Dollard-des-Ormeaux (DDO) when the shootout occurred. The family alleges that the police response was reckless, failing to take basic precautions to protect civilians [1][4].

According to the lawsuit, Houssam Abdallah was approached by armed officers with their shields and was handcuffed during the incident. To this day, the Abdallah family has received no information about the intervention [2]. The family believes they were victims of racial profiling in this case [3].

The authorities have not provided the family with a summary of the facts or a police report, citing the need to avoid interfering with the judicial process [2]. The Abdallah family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover legal fees and costs related to their new reality [5].

The incident has left Houssam Abdallah with a neurofunctional disorder and total loss of sensation in his left leg. He now requires constant care from his wife and cannot move without assistance, work, or drive [1]. As a result, his children have had to assume certain parental responsibilities [1].

On the day of the shootout, Houssam Abdallah's son whispered "I love you, Dad, please don't die," to help him hold on [6]. The family hopes that this lawsuit will bring them closure and ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the future.

  1. The Abdallah family's lawsuit, filed for $6.5 million against the Montreal Police Service and the City of Montreal, alleges racial profiling, excessive force, and negligence, raising concerns about the general-news and crime-and-justice sectors within Montreal politics.
  2. The lawsuit, stemming from a 2024 police shootout that left Houssam Abdallah paralyzed and in need of constant care, shows the impact of politics on justice, with the family still seeking information about the incident and demanding accountability for their experiences.
