Revved Up: Formula 1's comeback to South Africa

Get ready, South Africa! The roar of high-speed engines could soon echo across the African continent once again, as efforts to bring Formula 1 racing back to our shores are gaining momentum.

Kyalami's Transformation

Since last century, the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit near Johannesburg has been yearning for a chance to host a Formula 1 race, the last one being held back in 1993. Fast-forward to today, the circuit's owners have enlisted Apex Circuit Design to prepare a roadmap for FIA Grade 1 accreditation – a crucial step towards realizing this dream.

McKenzie's Push for the Podium

With visions of cheering crowds and the roar of Formula 1 cars, Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Mr. Gayton McKenzie, has been advocating for F1's return since early 2024. In an interview with Gauteng.net, he emphasized the potential revenue, jobs, and global exposure that the event could bring.

McKenzie's campaign has seen him reach out to both government and private sectors, with funding playing a vital role. To put things in perspective, hosting an F1 race could cost a cool R1 billion, as was the reported hosting fee for Azerbaijan in 2023.

SA vs Cape Town: Battle of the Tracks

While Cape Town initially proposed a new street circuit near the Green Point harbor area, both the national and provincial governments have shown their support for hosting the event in Gauteng – Kyalami's home province. While the decision-makers are nearing a choice, no final commitment has been made yet.

The Countdown Begins

With 2027 penciled in as a potential start date, Formula 1's return to South Africa is shaping up to be more than just a pipe dream. Top drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have shown their support for the bid, increasing the pressure to make this happen. Fingers crossed, South Africa! The grid may soon be lined with the best drivers in the world!
