Rise in Right-Wing Extremism in Essen Sparks Concerns

Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, has been experiencing a surge in right-wing extremist activities, causing significant concern for local authorities and residents.

Recently, a violent attack targeted the Left party and the alliance "Essen stands against" during a counter-protest against a right-wing march in Essen-Kray. Jennyfer Prus, a candidate for the Left party in the Essen municipal election, was among those attacked and injured.

The neighborhood living room Coralle in Essen was also subjected to an attack, with sulfuric acid being used and Nazi stickers placed around the area. The attack continued for some time before the police intervened. Three other people were also slightly injured and received medical treatment on the spot.

The attackers, a group of approximately 20 young men who appeared and behaved like Nazis, launched an unprovoked assault on the party members on the bus. The incident occurred on a bus returning from a demonstration against the youth wing of the right-wing extremist party "The Homeland".

The "Landesverband West" of the Young Nationalists, which is associated with "The Homeland" party, held their founding congress in Essen-Kray, Marienstraße 66a. However, it's important to note that any association with the attackers has not been confirmed.

The alliance "Essen stands against" has criticised the fact that a right-wing radical group was able to march through the district unobserved after a demonstration and attack people. This incident further fuels concerns about the growing presence of right-wing extremists in Essen.

Essen's increasing prominence as a hotspot for right-wing extremists follows Dortmund, with connections between right-wing extremists in Essen and the party "Der III. Weg", which has a national revolutionary contact point in the Sauerland.

The police, with reinforcements from Wuppertal present on site, underestimated the willingness to use violence by the attackers, according to reports. This incident underscores the need for more effective strategies to combat right-wing extremism in the region.

In August 2025, a Nazi scandal involving police officers in Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr shook North Rhine-Westphalia. The scandal involved right-wing extremist chat groups among police, raising alarm about extremism within law enforcement circles in this region. Such developments indicate a worrying infiltration of right-wing extremist ideology into public security agencies in Essen and surrounding areas.

The emergence of extremist networks within the police raises questions about the effectiveness of oversight and monitoring in the region. Larger demonstrations and public visibility of right-wing extremist groups have been reported in North Rhine-Westphalia, including in Essen.

At the federal level, political parties with right-wing extremist classifications, such as the AfD, face scrutiny and proposals for banning, underscoring political tensions linked to right-wing ideologies.

Special police task forces like the Soko Rechts have been operating over ten years to fight far-right extremism with specific strategies aimed at improving security. However, the emergence of extremist networks within the police calls into question the effectiveness of these measures.

In summary, Essen has recently been a focal point of right-wing extremist concerns due to police-related scandals and broader extremist activities in the region, highlighting ongoing challenges for public safety and social cohesion in North Rhine-Westphalia.
