Record-Breaking Temperatures in Southwestern Germany

Southwestern Germany has been experiencing unusually high temperatures in recent days, with both Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate recording temperatures close to 40°C (104°F) in July.

Baden-Württemberg, known for its summer temperatures reaching up to 39°C (102°F), particularly in July and August, saw temperatures of up to 37.0°C (98.6°F) in Rheinfelden, a city located at the border with Switzerland, in July 2025. Other areas near the French border noted temperatures above 35°C (95°F) during the same month.

Rhineland-Palatinate, on the other hand, commonly experiences maxima near 38°C (100.4°F) during the summer months. In July 2025, Andernach recorded a daily high of 39.3°C (102.74°F), making it the hottest day in the region for that year.

On Wednesday, temperatures in Rheinfelden, Baden-Württemberg reached up to 37.0°C (98.6°F), while Kaiserslautern and Bad Kreuznach in Rhineland-Palatinate saw temperatures of up to 36.5°C (97.7°F) and 36.6°C (97.88°F) respectively.

These temperatures reflect the recent climate trends of rising summer heat in southwestern Germany, especially in July, aligning with broader warming patterns observed in the region. The German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach reported these measurements.

Meteorologists predict temperatures between 30°C (86°F) and 37°C (98.6°F) for Thursday, with temperatures along the coasts expected to be lower than inland. The all-time temperature record for Germany is 41.2°C (106.16°F), measured on July 25, 2019 at the DWD weather stations in Tönisvorst and Duisburg-Baerl, both in North Rhineland-Westphalia.

The temperatures reported are provisional measurements from the DWD. Residents are advised to take precautions to protect themselves from the heat, especially the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

The weather in Southwestern Germany continues to soar, with recent forecasts predicting temperatures between 30°C (86°F) and 37°C (98.6°F) for Thursday. Meteorologists are closely monitoring the weather-forecasting data to predict potential record-breaking temperatures.
