"Extreme Weather Exhibition" showcases collaboration between Klimahaus Bremerhaven and Greenpeace at "Flood Apartment" display
In the heart of Bremerhaven, Germany, a unique installation named the 'Flood Apartment' is currently on display at Havenplaza. This apartment, a collaborative effort between Climate House Bremerhaven and Greenpeace, serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of weather extremes.
The living space, complete with sleeping and dining areas, as well as a kitchen, is furnished with pieces donated by residents affected by floods in the Ahr Valley of western Germany and the Italian region of Emilia Romagna. The furniture, damaged by the floodwaters, offers a tangible reminder of the destructive power of nature.
The 'Flood Apartment' installation was first displayed in Bremerhaven in June 2023, and it will remain open for visitors until October 2024. Ingrid Hayen, Managing Director of Climate House Bremerhaven, explains that the purpose of the installation is to urge climate protection and provide a tangible experience on the topics of climate and climate change.
The flood disaster in the Ahr Valley in July 2021 resulted in 135 lives lost, making it a significant source for the exhibition's furniture. Information boards within the apartment provide descriptions of the former owners' experiences with flood disasters.
From October 2024, the 'Flood Apartment' installation will be expanded to include a new exhibition area titled 'Weather Extremes'. This extension, part of the Climate House, aims to provide a deeper understanding of climate, climate change, and weather-related issues.
The 'Weather Extremes' exhibition is not the only initiative aimed at raising awareness about the impact of climate change. The 'Flood Apartment' installation, along with the upcoming exhibition, serves as a stark reminder that weather extremes are not abstract threats but real and close to home.
The 'Flood Apartment' installation is a testament to the power of collaboration and the shared responsibility we all have in addressing climate change. By visiting this installation, we can gain a deeper understanding of the consequences of inaction and the importance of taking steps towards a more sustainable future.
