Hot Weather Alert: Portugal and Madeira Archipelago Brace for Soaring Temperatures

Portugal and the Madeira archipelago are set to experience a heatwave from July 24th to 26th, 2025, according to the Portuguese Institute of Meteorology and Seismology (IPMA).

Mainland Portugal

Temperatures in mainland Portugal are expected to soar, with most areas seeing maximum temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius starting on Thursday. The Guadalquivir and Guadiana valleys may experience temperatures as high as 34-36°C on July 24th. In some inland areas, particularly in the southern region, the Tagus Valley, and Beira Baixa, minimum temperatures are expected to exceed 20 degrees Celsius.

The IPMA has placed the district of Lisbon under a yellow warning from 2 pm on July 24th to midnight on July 24th, due to forecasts of strong winds. However, the specifics about wind speed and direction for the rest of the period are not detailed in the sources.

While the likelihood of heavy rain is low, localized storms are possible in eastern regions. The hot, dry air masses are contributing to a wildfire risk in many inland areas.

Madeira Archipelago

The Madeira archipelago, known for its mild subtropical climate, is expected to see temperatures "hover around or even exceed 30 degrees Celsius, especially on the southern slopes and in mountainous regions." Madeira experiences persistent winds due to its island geography, contributing to moderate maritime influences and relatively stable weather patterns. No heavy rain is forecast for late July in the archipelago.

Anticyclone Activity

The anticyclone is expected to intensify and extend as a ridge toward the Bay of Biscay from July 24th onward, and eventually toward Central Europe from July 25th or 26th onward. Simultaneously, the anticyclone located southwest of the Azores region is expected to gradually move eastward/northeastward from July 24th onward.

Wind Conditions

The forecast predicts an intensification of winds along the western coast and in the highlands starting today, which will be moderate to strong from the north/northwest, sometimes with gusts. The IPMA predicts gusts of 70 kilometres per hour, especially in coastal areas and mountains.
