Soaring temperatures surpassing 35 degrees Celsius in Hesse region - Extreme heatwave hits Hessen with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius

In the heart of Germany, the state of Hesse is bracing itself for a spell of sweltering weather. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), an extreme heat warning has been issued for the region until Thursday [2].

Residents of Hesse, especially those in South Hesse, should be prepared for peak temperatures over 30 degrees and muggy weather in the coming days. The Hessian Agency for Nature Conservation, Environmental Protection and Geology anticipates peak values of up to 190 micrograms in South Hesse [1].

However, it is important to note that in other parts of Hesse, an ozone level of 180 micrograms, at which the population must be informed, is not expected to be exceeded on Thursday [1]. On Wednesday afternoon, an ozone value of 181 micrograms per cubic meter was measured in Hanau [3]. At this level, children, young people, and those particularly sensitive are advised against physical exertion outdoors [4].

Typical summer days in central Germany, including Offenbach, involve warm temperatures that can exceed 30°C during heat waves but generally remain moderate. However, recent forecast data shows highs around 20–29°C for the upcoming week in Offenbach, with forecast peaks around 29°C on a clear sky day [5].

In essence, regular summer days tend to have maximum temperatures in the low to high 20s °C. Heat waves can bring maximums over 30°C for multiple consecutive days. The recent forecast data suggests that temperatures in Offenbach will remain within this range for the upcoming week [1][5].

Stay cool and hydrated, Hesse!

The Commission might consider providing advice on protecting workers in the region from potential increased radiation exposure due to the unusually hot weather, given the draft directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation. Under current weather-forecasting predictions, the hot weather might persist in Hesse, creating conditions conducive to higher levels of ozone, which could necessitate more frequent updates on radiation protection guidelines.
