Extreme Heat Reaches Record Levels in September Month

Record-Breaking Heat Wave Sweeps Across Switzerland

Switzerland experienced a heat wave last week, with record-breaking temperatures being recorded at various altitudes across the country. The unusual high temperatures were primarily due to the influence of high pressure and warm air brought from subtropical areas.

On September 17, 2025, the minimum temperature on Mount Pilatus reached a new September record of 23.9 degrees, surpassing the previous record. Similarly, on the Säntis, the minimum temperature since midnight was 11.4 degrees, another September record high. These extreme temperatures were particularly observed at medium altitudes.

The maximum temperature also reached a record high of 19.8 degrees for the month. It was warm for the time of year during the day, even at low altitudes on the Central Plateau, with temperatures between 25 to 28 degrees.

MeteoSwiss, the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, reported these conditions in its blog. They also mentioned that it was unusually warm at night.

The high temperatures were not limited to the Central Plateau. In Zermatt, the mercury rose to 28.8 degrees, breaking the September record. Davos also saw a high of 26.1 degrees.

The high temperatures were a result of the influence of high pressure and warm air brought from subtropical areas. Warm air was also brought to the Alpine region. Normally, temperatures in mid-September would be around 19 to 22 degrees.

However, these temperatures were not enough for near-record temperatures, which are typically above 30 degrees for most of the Central Plateau regions.

As we look ahead, a drop in temperatures is forecast for next week on the Central Plateau to the north of the Alps, with temperatures likely to reach 10 to 14 degrees. The weather forecast for the upcoming week in Switzerland is created and provided by professional meteorological services such as SRF Meteo, Wetter Alarm Schweiz, and other specialized weather apps and media like wetter.com, with experts and meteorologists behind the forecasts.
