Extra-inning thriller: Ryan McMahon seals Yankees' dramatic victory over Rays with a walk-off hit in the 11th

Tuesday evening, Cody Bellinger breathed renewed life into the Yankees. The next day, he did it again. With Aaron Judge out of the game, there's no argument about who the Yankees' most indispensable player is. Bellinger's RBI triple tied the game in the 10th, while Ryan McMahon's fly ball...

Extra-inning thriller: Ryan McMahon seals Yankees' dramatic victory over Rays with a walk-off hit in the 11th

In the latest game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Giancarlo Stanton has emerged as the most valuable position player for the New York Yankees. With Aaron Judge sidelined and limited to designated hitter duties due to a right flexor strain, Stanton has taken on a more significant role, particularly in the outfield.

Judge returned to the lineup as a DH but has not resumed full defensive duties, and his throwing ability will likely remain limited for the rest of the season. This has resulted in Stanton becoming the key defensive and offensive presence in Judge’s absence.

The Yankees activated outfielder Amed Rosario while optioning catcher J.C. Escarra to Triple-A, indicating some roster adjustments around the outfield and bench in light of Judge’s injury status. However, Stanton remains the standout player, effectively the Yankees' most valuable everyday position player on the field during Judge’s ongoing recovery.

On the field, the game was a tight contest. Junior Caminero was picked off second base in the second inning, and Aranda was caught stealing in the fourth. The Rays struck first in the third, when Josh Lowe plated Taylor Walls with a two-out, run-scoring double.

The Yankees' bats woke up in the eighth, with Grisham, Rice, Bellinger, and Stanton getting hits. Stanton's single in the eighth inning scored Ben Rice, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

Will Warren delivered a solid performance, making it through six innings for the first time since June 25. He allowed six hits, struck out four, and walked only one while tying his season high with 102 pitches. However, he received a hard-luck no decision after Devin Williams blew a one-run lead in the top of the ninth, allowing a two-run Josh Lowe homer for his first blown save since April 25.

The Yankees had to rally from three runs down on Tuesday and managed just two hits over the first seven innings on Wednesday. Their best chance to score came in the second inning, but Cody Bellinger grounded out to end the threat.

However, Bellinger gave the Yankees life twice, with an RBI triple on Tuesday and a single on Wednesday. Trent Grisham homered leading off the eighth frame, and Stanton's clutch hit in the same inning plated the go-ahead run. Clutch hits by Bellinger and Anthony Volpe, including Volpe's ninth-inning homer, helped the Yankees force extra innings.

In the 10th inning, Luke Weaver allowed the automatic runner to score on a Jonathan Aranda sacrifice fly. Ryan McMahon's fly ball single eventually sealed a dramatic 5-4 win for the Yankees.

Tim Hill worked a scoreless 11th for the victory, securing a much-needed win for the Yankees in their ongoing battle against the Rays. Despite the challenges posed by injuries, Stanton's consistent performance and adaptability have proven invaluable to the team.
