Expressing disbelief, relatives of the market shooter speak out
In a shocking turn of events, Bangkok's Or Tor Kor Market was closed for a day on Tuesday, following a tragic shooting incident that occurred on Monday afternoon.
The gunman, identified as Noi Praidaen, a 61-year-old former security guard from Nakhon Ratchasima, entered the market around 12.30pm and opened fire. Six people lost their lives in the incident: four security guards, a vendor, and the gunman himself. Two women were injured and taken to Phayathai Hospital.
Noi, who had a long-standing personal dispute with a current security guard at the market named Anan Panchuen, appears to have been the primary instigator of the violence. The conflict between the two men dates back to an incident in 2020, when Noi dropped off his wife at the market to sell dried food and parked his car there. Anan was accused of slashing Noi's vehicle during that time, which appears to have fueled the personal grievance between the two men.
Upon arrival at the market, Noi calmly entered and opened fire. He shot dead five people, including Anan Panchuen and one vendor. After the shooting, Noi committed suicide inside the market, sitting on a nearby bench. The other victims were also shot in vital organs.
Noi was dressed in black clothing and camouflage shorts during the shooting. He legally owned the firearm used in the attack, which he usually kept in his car.
Officials are working to strengthen security measures before reopening the market on Wednesday. Relatives of the victims have begun arriving to claim them for religious rites. The exact motive for the shooting is still under investigation.
Noi Praidaen, the gunman, lived in Bangkok with his wife for more than 30 years and ran a stall at the Or Tor Kor Market. He was described as kind and family-oriented, with no known history of violence.
Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected by this tragic incident. We will continue to update you as more information becomes available.
