In the northeastern region of Thailand, bordering Cambodia, a series of landmine explosions have become a significant point of contention between the two countries. The Royal Thai Army reported these incidents, which are linked to border patrol activities, as the Thai military and government express their disapproval towards Cambodia's use of anti-personnel landmines.

The latest explosion occurred on Tuesday morning, 9.10am, near the Ta Muen Thom temple ruins in Surin province. This incident resulted in a paramilitary ranger losing a leg, and 12 other soldiers were injured. The specific temple site involved in the incident is Ta Muen Thom.

The landmine explosions have not been an isolated occurrence. In July 2025, these incidents escalated notably, with five Thai soldiers injured by landmines near the Chong An Ma border crossing in Ubon Ratchathani province, one of whom lost a leg. The following day, Thai and Cambodian troops exchanged fire near the Ta Muen Thom Sanctuary.

The use of landmines by Cambodia not only violates the Ottawa Treaty but also demonstrates Cambodia's insincerity in its ceasefire agreement with Thailand. These incidents have significantly heightened military tensions along the border, contributing to armed clashes and casualties.

The ongoing landmine incidents have had a ripple effect, affecting both military and civilian populations. The injured ranger was rushed to a hospital following the incident, and the total number of injured Thai soldiers now stands at 16. The border military presence of both countries has been strengthened, escalating a decades-long territorial dispute centered on non-demarcated areas and contested cultural sites.

The civilian impact includes the temporary closure of border crossings and tourist sites. Thailand closed northeastern border crossings and suspended visits to sanctuaries to improve security. The diplomatic response has been swift and significant, with Thailand recalling its ambassador from Phnom Penh and expelling the Cambodian ambassador. Both countries have closed multiple border crossings and announced reviews of bilateral diplomatic relations.

The situation has drawn international attention due to its potential to worsen long-standing border disputes. Calls for urgent diplomatic action and de-escalation have been made to prevent further escalation and loss of life. The recent landmine incidents along the Thai-Cambodian border highlight the urgent need for dialogue and cooperation to address these ongoing issues and ensure peace and stability in the region.
