Explosive device in Berlin-Mitte requires no disarmament
In a series of unexpected discoveries, two World War II bombs have been found in Berlin, one in Berlin-Mitte and the other in Berlin-Spandau.
In Berlin-Mitte, a 100-kilogram bomb was discovered in the Spree river. The area around the discovery site was immediately cordoned off, leading several thousand people to evacuate their homes. However, the bomb has since been classified as harmless following an inspection. The bomb will be removed from the Spree and disposed of safely.
Meanwhile, in Berlin-Spandau, a similar incident occurred. A 100-kilogram bomb was found, and a safety perimeter was established to ensure safety during the expected defusing of the bomb. The bomb does not need to be defused, as it has also been deemed harmless. The bomb will be removed from the site and disposed of according to protocol.
A spokesperson for the Berlin Police announced that there is no longer any danger from either bomb. The bomb disposal experts (bomb squad), typically the 'Kampfmittelbeseitigungsdienst' (bomb disposal service), coordinated by the Berlin police, will be responsible for the removal and safe disposal of the bombs. No individual name has been publicly disclosed in the sources.
The announcements were made to the German Press Agency, and the cordoned-off areas have been lifted. In both Berlin-Mitte and Berlin-Spandau, the safety perimeters have been dismantled, allowing residents to return to their homes.
These discoveries serve as a reminder of the remnants of war that still exist beneath the city's surface. It is always crucial to take precautions when such finds are made to ensure the safety of the public.
