In the ongoing Ukraine crisis, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have expressed their support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and called for a comprehensive approach to bring an end to the war. This approach emphasises active diplomacy, support for Ukraine, and pressure on Russia.

In a joint statement, European states have upheld the principle that international borders should not be changed by force and have welcomed US President Donald Trump's efforts to end the killing in Ukraine and create a fair peace.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has demanded that Kyiv be involved in negotiations about ending the Russian invasion. He has also coordinated with representatives from the UK, US, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and Poland during a meeting in the UK.

Vitali Klitschko, Kiev's mayor, has expressed great war-weariness among the people of Ukraine and has emphasised the need for negotiations with Russia. Klitschko called for a "diplomatic solution" with Russia, not ruling out territorial concessions. He also noted that hundreds of cities have been destroyed and "a large part of Ukraine is occupied by Russia."

As of mid-August 2025, the military situation in Ukraine remains active with ongoing hostilities and localized battles in several regions.

In the Sumy Region, Russian forces continue artillery and drone strikes targeting civilian infrastructure and settlements, causing casualties and damage. On August 14–15 alone, over 100 strikes hit 46 settlements in Sumy, resulting in injuries and evacuation efforts.

The Zaporizhzhia Region faces heavy Russian strikes, with 578 strikes recorded on August 14 in 14 settlements, leading to civilian casualties. Russian forces have reportedly conducted coordinated attacks against Ukrainian defense units around Zaporizhzhia, claiming territorial gains.

In the Odessa Region, there are no recent direct reports of large-scale fighting or territorial changes. However, Russian forces have advanced in areas to the east and northeast of Dobropillya (in Donetsk Oblast, northeast of Odessa region geographically) and have struggled to consolidate deeper territorial gains there due to Ukrainian counterattacks.

Overall, Ukrainian forces continue to defend firmly, receiving reinforcements and counterattacking on several fronts. Russian forces advance in some settlements but face logistical and operational challenges, especially against Ukrainian drone operations and flank attacks. The conflict remains highly dynamic with ongoing strikes causing civilian casualties and infrastructure damage across these regions.

| Region | Status as of Mid-August 2025 | |-------------|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Sumy | Intense Russian shelling and drone attacks, civilian casualties, some evacuations, ongoing heavy fighting | | Zaporizhzhia| Russian strikes and military advances reported, especially targeting Ukrainian defense units, causing losses | | Odessa | No major recent frontline advances reported, some political unrest within city; frontline active mostly east |

This assessment is based on combined data from both Ukrainian and Russian official and independent reporting sources available until August 16, 2025. Starmer and Macron have also discussed how they can work closely with Trump and Zelensky in the coming days to find a lasting solution to the crisis.

  1. The ongoing Ukraine crisis, characterized by intense shelling and drone attacks in regions like Sumy and Zaporizhzhia, necessitates a comprehensive approach that involves not only diplomatic efforts but also pressuring Russia, like that suggested in the community policy and employment policies of various European nations, as well as the US.
  2. As the situation in Ukraine remains highly dynamic, with ongoing military action and civilian casualties, it is crucial for the leaders of the UK, US, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and Poland to consider a diplomatic solution that addresses territorial concessions, as called for by Ukraine's Mayor Vitali Klitschko, while addressing the general news and crime-and-justice aspects of the crisis to ensure a fair and lasting peace.
