Ukraine masterfully detonated the Kerch bridge, the main artery connecting Russia to the seized Crimea region, as demonstrated in a video released by Ukraine's Security Service on Tuesday. The audacious operation employed subterranean explosives for a smooth, civilian-casualty-free strike.

A Brief Rewind

According to Euro News, the Kerch bridge, unlawfully constructed by Russia following its one-sided annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula in 2014, stands as a key bridge in Crimea. Ukrainian media have confirmed that extensive preparations for this clandestine operation were meticulously executed over several months.

In the official statement disseminated through Telegram, the SBU declared, "Our specialists mined the very foundation of this lawless construction." The first explosion was activated at 4:44 a.m. without causing any reported civilian loss.

Ukraine's Persistent Challenge

In the October 2022 attacks, a truck bomb sent shockwaves through the bridge. Sea drones were the culprits during the July 2023 attack, leaving its defense forces struggling to protect it. The recent underwater operation on June 3 or 4, 2025, utilized a staggering 1,100 kilograms of explosives in TNT equivalent, causing severe damage to the bridge's underwater supports. The extent of the damage, however, is a point of contention.

The SBU released footage showcasing the explosion but failed to provide clear evidence of the full extent of the damage inflicted upon the structure. The recurring attacks on the Kerch bridge highlight Ukraine's unrelenting pursuit to disrupt Russia's logistical lines and challenge its dominance over the Crimean Peninsula. The Kerch Bridge, being a critical transportation link reinforcing Russian forces, has emerged as a consistent focal point in this ongoing battle.
