Explosion at fuel facility near Odessa, Ukraine, following deliberate drone strike by Russian forces

In the past few weeks, Ukraine has faced a series of drone attacks from Russia, causing significant damage to fuel and energy infrastructure in the Odessa region.

The latest incident occurred on August 20, when a large fire broke out at a fuel and energy facility in Odessa, following a Russian drone attack. The tanker Excellion was also damaged during this strike, but thankfully, there have been no reported casualties so far. This attack came after an earlier attack on August 8, which caused a fire at the SOCAR oil base in Odessa, injuring four employees seriously.

The attacks have not been limited to the Odessa region. Other energy infrastructure such as compressor stations have also been targeted in the broader region, as part of reciprocal strikes amid the ongoing conflict.

Emergency crews, including firefighters and a firefighting train, have been involved in extinguishing these fires and managing the damage. Some injuries have been reported among workers and others during these operations.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is traveling to Washington with European accompaniment, seeking a negotiated solution to the war with Russia. US President Donald Trump has urged Zelensky to renounce the Crimea peninsula and refrain from seeking NATO membership as conditions for a peace deal. However, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, has stated that NATO membership would be the best security guarantee for Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine continues unabated, with several injuries reported in a Russian missile attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. At least three people have been killed and 17 injured, including a 13-year-old child.

As the situation in Ukraine remains tense, calls for tougher action against Russia are growing. Green foreign policy expert Omid Nouripour is advocating for tougher EU sanctions, while CDU foreign policy expert Roderich Kiesewetter is urging Europeans to adopt a tough stance against Russia and be ready to make executive decisions at the national level to secure a possible ceasefire.

Former US Vice President Mike Pence is also calling on President Donald Trump to impose new secondary sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin. Pence emphasized that "the only long-term credible security guarantee" for Ukraine is NATO membership.

As the conflict continues, the Ukrainian General Staff has reported around 1,070,890 soldiers lost by Russian troops in Ukraine since February 24, 2022, with a daily loss of 940.

In a bid to force Russia to a 'real peace', Zelensky is seeking support from the USA and Europe. Chancellor Olaf Scholz will also be present at the meeting with US President Joe Biden. The specific facility affected by the drone attack in Odessa has not yet been disclosed.
