British World War II Bomb Discovered at Dresden Construction Site

A British World War II bomb was discovered at the construction site of the Carolabridge in Dresden, Germany, on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. The bomb, weighing approximately 550 pounds (250 kilograms), was found in an excavation pit at the corner of Fetscherstraße/Blasewitzer Straße.

Despite the discovery, no details were given about whether defusing or on-site detonation was necessary for the bomb. The police spokesperson, however, stated that no major response measures are required.

The bomb's discovery required the evacuation of around 17,000 residents from eastern Dresden, including parts of the Old Town, the Frauenkirche, multiple hotels, a hospital, schools, and old people's homes. The evacuation area was planned to be cleared by 9 a.m. local time on August 6, 2025, with defusal operations starting soon after.

By 1:19 p.m. local time on August 6, the bomb squad successfully removed the detonator, and the evacuation order was lifted. It's important to note that this discovery is part of a broader pattern of unexploded World War II ordnance being uncovered during modern construction work in Germany.

In a separate incident, a British incendiary bomb was discovered at the Heart Center construction site in Dresden-Blasewitz. In this case, the bomb could be neutralized and safely removed. The police did not issue any statements about the response measures required for the bomb found at the Carolabridge site.

These events highlight the ongoing risks posed by unexploded ordnance more than 80 years after World War II in German cities like Dresden. The public is advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious findings to the authorities immediately.
