One such moment is the iconic shot of Bob Marley in a van, a photograph that remains a cornerstone of Morris's collection. The story behind this photograph is as compelling as the image itself. At the age of 14, Morris skipped school to photograph Bob Marley during his first tour in England in 1973. During the tour, Morris engaged in a conversation with Marley, deepening their connection, and Marley invited Morris to join him on tour.
Morris's career expanded beyond Bob Marley, documenting a variety of musicians and cultural scenes. He was present during the peak of the punk movement in 1977, where he had an influential meeting with the Sex Pistols. Morris was also photographed by another artist and photographer during this time, further solidifying his place in the annals of music photography.
The exhibition also includes a new accompanying book that discusses Morris's unique experiences throughout his career. The book delves into Morris's focus on creating a dialogue through images, documenting his community and neighbourhood. His work on projects like Growing Up Black and Southall - A Home from Home focused on the intricate narratives of black culture and community life in London.
Morris believes in revealing the true essence of his subjects, taking away the mask to reveal their true self in his photographs. This approach is evident in his work, which has received accolades at exhibitions in Paris and The Photographers' Gallery. The public has shown a nostalgia for shared experiences, particularly those captured in the Growing Up Black series.
