Exploring the playoff possibilities for the Mariners within the American League context
The final 10 days of the 2025 MLB regular season are shaping up to be uncertain, chaotic, and dramatic, as seven teams in the American League are separated by just four losses, vying for six postseason spots.
Currently, the Cleveland Guardians (81-71) and Toronto Blue Jays (89-64) are leading the pack, but they are not alone in the race. The Boston Red Sox are still in the running with nine games remaining, while the Mariners and Astros are tied atop the AL West division.
The Astros, who have won the AL West seven out of the last eight seasons, may face a tough challenge against the A's and Angels in their final nine games, potentially opening the door for other teams to snatch the division title.
The Guardians hold a tiebreaker over the Astros, but they lose tiebreakers to the Red Sox, Tigers, and Mariners. The tiebreakers with the Yankees and Red Sox are yet to be decided. The Yankees, with a record of 86-67, hold the tiebreaker over Seattle, but lose tiebreakers with the Tigers and Red Sox.
The Red Sox's final nine games include three at Tampa Bay and three at Toronto, while the Blue Jays face solid teams over their last nine, with three at Kansas City, three vs. Boston, and three vs. Tampa Bay. Cleveland's remaining schedule includes four games at Minnesota, three vs. Detroit, and three vs. Texas.
Detroit, with a record of 85-68, has a challenging schedule ahead, with three games against Atlanta, three at Cleveland, and three at Boston. The Tigers' Tarik Skubal is expected to make two more starts in the regular season.
Meanwhile, the Mariners could make history by winning the AL West for the first time since 2001, overtaking the Tigers for the No. 2 seed, or earning a wild card spot. Their final nine games include three at Houston, three vs. Colorado, and three vs. the L.A. Dodgers.
In the National League, the Dodgers, who hold a 2 1/2 game lead over the Padres in the NL West, may rest key players or manipulate their rotation for the wild-card series. The teams that qualify for the 2025 American League Division Series or Wild Card round will be those qualifying through regular season standings and Wild Card games. Division winners and the top wild card team will hold home-field advantage in the Division Series, while Wild Card round games will be played at the home stadium of the higher seed.
As the race for the postseason intensifies, fans can expect a thrilling finish to the 2025 MLB regular season.
