Achieving Immortality: Exploring the Boundaries in Ambrosia Sky

Embrace the unknown, challenged by the prospect of endless life! That's the intriguing premise behind Ambrosia Sky, the maiden venture from studio Soft Rains. With members scattered across the globe, Soft Rains champions remote work, promoting collaboration wherever you call home. They've also united forces with Blackbird Interactive, another remote-friendly Canadian studio contributing to the project.

I recently got the opportunity to delve into Ambrosia Sky at the Summer Game Fest 2025 while conversing with its art director, Adam Volker. Initial impressions? A remarkable fusion of thrilling first-person gameplay and jaw-dropping visual design!

In Ambrosia Sky, players assume the role of Dalia, a disaster clean-up specialist and 'closer,' tasked with eradicating a viciously aggressive fungus and capturing the parting words of the deceased. A versatile space witch, Dalia is a member of the Ambrosia project, an initiative striving to unlock death's secrets, hoping to shatter humankind's final frontier.

Ambrosia Sky, labeled as a first-person shooter, equips players with Dalia's Sprayer, a versatile tool used to slice through fungal obstacles and combat "Spitters" - little, aggressive alien creatures. The infected fungus evolves irrationally, with explosive or electric bulbs that can trigger disastrous chain reactions. Soft Rains has applied voxel-based technology to render the fungus, highlighting the importance of precision in your progression.

As you advance, your Sprayer can be enhanced with various capabilities, such as a wide horizontal setting for efficient cleanups and an electric setting to power locked doors using conductivity. To attain these improvements, you'll need to retrieve fungal samples without detonating them—an additional incentive to maintain caution during your travels.

Although simple at first, the challenges rise as you encounter a variety of puzzles necessitating environmental manipulation. For example, toxic miasma could cover a room's floor, forcing you to locate the gravity controls that allow you to float and navigate safely. Similar to Prey, this gameplay style leaves a lasting impression.

All the environments are meticulously designed and styled with breathtaking art direction. Backed by a haunting soundtrack composed by Greg Harrison, it evokes a sense of awe and reminds you of other awe-inspiring science-fiction narratives, such as the unjustly underrated Scavengers Reign.

Despite being some time away from launch, Adam Volker revealed that the full release will feature voice acting for several segments currently only subtitled.

As of now, Ambrosia Sky does not have a specified release date or window. In the meantime, those eager to dive in can check out the live demo on Steam, which includes two missions. Even though I played the demo on a PC, Adam assured me that it performs exceptionally on Steam Deck, making it a perfect pick for portable gaming.

Whilst the demo offers only a fragment of what Ambrosia Sky has in store, it already leaves a lasting impression. With its unique blend of science fiction and shooter elements, it's a game I can't wait to see unfold. Keep your eyes peeled for updates!
