Exploring the Connection: Deleuze's Engagement with Sigmund Freud's Thoughts
In the realm of comic literature, a unique and thought-provoking work stands out - 'Salut, Deleuze!'. This comic, published by Reprodukt, offers a captivating narrative that features the journey of the renowned French philosopher, Gilles Deleuze, to the realm of the dead.
Upon his arrival, Deleuze encounters posthumous versions of his intellectual peers - Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan, and Roland Barthes, among others. One intriguing character is Sigmund Freud, who, in the comic, is cultivating mushroom networks in the underworld. Interestingly, Freud is revealed to have hinted at a mushroom theory in his seminal work, 'The Interpretation of Dreams'.
The comic, which costs 29€, consists of 176 pages and is available in a hardcover edition. 'Salut, Deleuze!' is not an advertisement but a published work, first appearing in 2000, with an expanded version serialised in the 'Berliner Seiten' of the 'FAZ' in 2001.
The comic does not repeat earlier facts from its narrative, but it does explore the concept of the four social philosophers discovering the value of friendship. This narrative aligns with Deleuze's espoused ideas, such as 'rhizomatic thinking', a non-linear, non-hierarchical approach to thought, which he and Felix Guattari promoted.
It's worth noting that Deleuze and Guattari also coined the term 'desiring machine' in their book 'Anti-Oedipus' in 1972. Deleuze himself wrote a habilitation thesis titled 'Difference and Repetition' in 1968.
As we approach the 30th anniversary of Deleuze's death in 2025, his 100th birthday will also be celebrated. Born on January 18, 1925, and passing away on November 4, 1995, Deleuze's legacy continues to inspire and intrigue, as evidenced by 'Salut, Deleuze!'. In the comic, Deleuze is delighted to find Sigmund Freud in the afterlife, further underscoring the enduring impact of these intellectual titans.
