German Evacuation Plans for Israel Amid Middle East Tensions
Exploring potential evacuation scenarios from Israel, Berlin deliberates on possible action plans.
Germany's federal government is actively considering emergency evacuation options for its citizens in Israel due to heightened tensions in the region. With neighboring countries like Poland and the Czech Republic already taking steps to protect their citizens, Germany is under pressure to act swiftly. However, the government spokesperson stressed they are weighing all available options, including air and ground routes.
Amidst these efforts, the crisis preparedness list, Elefand, has seen a significant surge in registrations - approximately 4,000 Germans in Israel and around 1,000 in Iran have signed up. The government urges all German citizens in the region to register on Elefand for timely contact.
As for Poland, they are planning a convoy to safely evacuate their citizens by land to neighboring Jordan, before they are flown back to Poland. The exact timeline for this operation remains undisclosed, but it's intended to only help those stranded as tourists or those with a short-term stay in Israel. Poland isn't planning to evacuate citizens from the entire Middle East region.
Slovakia too, has sent two government planes to rescue its citizens from the crisis area. The first plane is expected to return to Bratislava on Monday evening, but details about passengers are being kept under wraps for security reasons. The second flight is expected to arrive from Cyprus with more evacuees. Slovakia is also aiding citizens of other European countries in its evacuation efforts.
Romanian media reports suggest some Romanians have already left Israel via Jordan by land. Egypt serves as another potential land route, but Romania's government has yet to announce any evacuation plans.
Tensions in the Middle East have spurred an international response, with the EU supporting member countries in evacuating their citizens. The United Kingdom is advising its citizens in Israel to stay near bomb shelters and register their presence while also providing logistical support for those leaving the region via overland routes through Jordan and Egypt.
