New York City's Mounted Unit: A Unique Blend of Tradition and Modern Policing

In the heart of New York City, nestled in a quiet neighbourhood away from the bustling city centre, lies the home of the NYPD's Mounted Unit. Established and based at Troop B, near a Mercedes dealership, this unique police force has been serving the city since 2009.

The Mounted Unit's horses are more than just transportation for the officers; they are ambassadors, representing New York City and its law enforcement to the world. Each horse is assigned a four-digit number based on the year and order they entered service. For instance, Officer Jonathan Azzaro was partnered with Broadway, a 15-year-old black quarter horse/draft cross, following his graduation from the Mounted Unit.

The horses in the Mounted Unit are carefully selected. The NYPD looks for geldings from 15.3-16.2 hands, between five and 10 years old, for their mounts. After undergoing a three-month intensive training at the Remount School of Horsemanship, officers are then matched with horses based on their riding style and the horse's temperament. Deputy Inspector Gelbman considers a variety of factors, including equestrian skills, horse's demeanor, and officer's experience, when matching horses and officers.

The officers in the Mounted Unit share a sense of family and an unbreakable bond with their horses. Broadway, who has been in the unit since 2009, is described as having a cool personality and being very lovable, especially towards children. Officer Azzaro has encountered people who have come to see a Mounted Officer in New York City as a bucket list item. Interactions with Mounted Officers can be a significant and memorable experience for visitors to New York City.

The Mounted Unit's indoor training and tack room are organized and contain custom-made tack from a Brooklyn cobbler. The officers go through rigorous training to ensure they can effectively handle their horses in various situations.

Mounted Officers are highly visible and approachable, often being the first point of contact for citizens needing help or direction. They help keep the streets of New York City's boroughs (excluding Staten Island) safe, with their main advantage being their height for better visibility. The NYPD does not prioritize the color or breed of the horse; instead, they focus on the horse's temperament and suitability for the job.

Access to the Mounted Unit was provided by NYPD's Public Information Officer, Detective Brian Magoolaghan. The New York City Mounted Unit is more than just a police force; it's a symbol of tradition, camaraderie, and service, embodying the spirit of New York City.
