My extraordinary visit occurred in mid-September, when the sun still illuminated the cobblestones, the leaves donned their copper hues, and the CultuurSplash Festival, brimming with events, transformed the cityscape over a long weekend. Come for Christmas, and the enchanting festive market under the majestic St Rumbold's Tower more than compensates for the chill. Whenever you arrive, allow ample time to savor Mechelen's treasures – neglecting to do so would be a mere day trip from Brussels.

A Grand Splurge: Martin's Patershof
If you're yearning for a luxurious stay, consider booking a room at Martin's Patershof, a former monastery transformed into a posh hotel. While the conversion had to be reversible to preserve the monumental stained glass windows and the cathedral-like atmosphere, the hotel nestles comfortably within the sacred space. The Ursuline Winter Gardens was one of my astonishing discoveries during my time in Mechelen. A once-prominent boarding school for girls, the space is now a stunning spectacle displayed in an art nouveau hall adorned with breathtaking stained glass. Closed to the public for over a century, it has recently been restored to its former glory. Even a brief visit to sit by the central fountain in the glass room is well worth the bus ride out of the city. Booking tickets early is advised for this hidden gem.
Savor History in Every Bite with Cesspool-Inspired Cuisine
The culinary universe of Mechelen took a surprising twist with the help of food archaeologist Jeroen Van Vaerenbergh, who unearthed a centuries-old cesspool that had perfectly preserved the meals and waste of the city's affluent residents. The insights gleaned from this discovery inspired the creation of Mmm Mechelen, a project with 10 participating venues across the city, each offering dishes and drinks with flavors inspired by the Middle Ages.

De Vleeshalle
Mechelen's former meat market has been marvelously transformed into a bustling social hub where you can grab a casual lunch or easy dinner. There's a variety of small dining spots, bars serving refreshing beverages, and numerous food outlets offering everything from traditional Bitterballen to veggie wraps and South Asian curries. Nam Nam Vietnamese was my top pick.
De Gouden Vis
This retro canalside bar exudes elegance. On one side, you'll find a classic bar furnished with chess-like flooring, and on the other, a hidden, canal-side terrace beckons. Indulge in an enticing craft beer menu and soak up the riverside ambiance. De Gouden Vis is the perfect place for a sunset cocktail.
Funky Jungle
A picturesque, all-vegan restaurant, Funky Jungle, lives up to its name, boasting a vibrant, toucan-adorned interior and tables nestled under the watchful glance of St Rumbold's Tower. As one of the establishments participating in the Mmm Mechelen project, I was tempted by the curious Burgundian burger and a creative citrus-seed cocktail. The plant-based cuisine was a delightful surprise.
Het Bestek
I adored this delightful lunch spot, especially indulging in my meal alfresco in the charming, sun-drenched courtyard out back. Het Bestek's menu changes seasonally, focusing on healthy, artfully prepared dishes. Daily set lunch options make decision-making a breeze, no matter how tantalizing the menu options may be.
Lam'eau
A laid-back restaurant housed in a former beer factory (of course), Lam'eau offers an industrial yet chic dining experience. Make reservations for a waterside table to savor exquisite seafood dishes and soak in the picturesque view. Warning: the cuisine may be a bit pricey, but the three-course, set-price lunch menu is a wallet-friendly way to sample the delights on offer.
Het Anker or Batteliek
No visit to Belgium is complete without a brewery visit. Mechelen offers tempting options, like Het Anker, which offers brewery tours with tastings and comfortable dining spaces for satisfying hearty meals and stews. Batteliek, housed in a former church, is a laid-back microbrewery that provides a unique, spiritual atmosphere for your ale-indulging endeavors.

Going There
Mechelen can easily be reached from the UK via the Eurostar to Brussels, followed by a 25-minute train ride to Mechelen. Those arriving via Brussels airport can also effortlessly hop on a train from the capital.
Making Your Way Around
Mechelen is a comfortable city to explore by foot, with the compact, pedestrianized city center easily navigated on a stroll. Cycling opens up additional avenues for exploration, while river boats offer leisurely sightseeing cruises. City buses operate in the center, and tickets, payable by contactless onboard, are priced at €2.50 for 60 minutes.
