Set Sails for Hamburg: Five Unconventional Spots to Explore
- Guide: Gunnar Herbst
- Explore these five captivating spots in Hamburg for an unforgettable experience
Explore my beloved hometown, Hamburg, nestled by the Elbe River, where the city's pulsating heart never ceases to captivate. As a kid, I'd frolic along its banks, rummage through flea markets, and share boat-watching adventures with my waterfront buddy. To this day, the city attracts countless sun worshippers meandering its waterfront paths. In an attempt to evade prying eyes, some locals post notes on their fishermen and pilot homes: "The Elbe is on the opposite side."
As I matured, my horizons expanded beyond the confines of Ottensen, the Schanzenviertel, and even ventured east of the Alster, reaching the eternal trendy district, Wilhelmsburg in the south. The harbor remains one of the city's top draws, alongside the Michel, Elbphilharmonie, Speicherstadt, and the Jungfernstieg with Binnenalster and City Hall Square. Though commonly featured in travel guides, here are my personal Hamburg must-sees, blending well-known attractions with quirky hidden gems. These spots offer invaluable glimpses into the city's heart and soul.
