Cycling Through the Enchanting Region of Lublin Voivodeship: A Tale of Two Wheels

Explore the picturesque town of Kazimierz Dolny by bicycle!

If you're a bike enthusiast, Lublin Voivodeship in Poland is a paradise waiting to be explored! Here's a rundown of some memorable bike trails that takes you through picturesque landscapes steeped in history.

The Ancient Roots of Lublin

Before we embark on our cycling adventures, let's pay a quick visit to the city of Lublin itself. Here, you'll find the Open Air Village Museum - one of Poland's largest open-air museums. It offers a glimpse into the former life in a village, manor, and small town. Though it's an interesting stop, nature and old buildings are where our heart truly lies!

From Pastoral Lublin to the Charming Kazimierz Dolny

The Open Air Museum also marks the starting point of a red trail leading to Kazimierz Dolny. You have two options: a paved road for bike lovers or a rougher terrain for those who prefer a challenge. As I took the walking trail, my route was a mix of bike and walking paths, yet it turned out to be a delightful journey!

The trail guides you through tranquil village roads, fields, canola, and hops cultivation. The highlight comes after Nałęczów, as you'll ride past breathtaking loess gullies. The journey ends in the castle ruins of Bochotnica from the 14th century.

Exploring North - Puławy and Beyond

After you've spent time in Kazimierz Dolny, you can head north. If you fancy forest paths, hills, mud, and winding trails, then choose the trail between Kazimierz and Puławy. You'll encounter forests, muddy terrains, wider trails, and even an orchard with a beehive!

Puławy is an ideal starting or finishing point for your biking trip, with a railway station nearby. Just remember that there are two stations, "Puławy" and "Puławy Miasto," which are 4 km apart. A quick Google Maps check before setting off will save you the fate I encountered on my first trip! Delayed by 3 minutes for my train to Warsaw, I learned the hard way!

In Puławy, you can visit the charming Czartoryski Palace or unwind at the picturesque "Łęg na Kḛpie" nature reserve. If you fancy riding along the Vistula river instead, you can catch stunning views along the way.

Venturing South to Opole Lubelskie and More

Lastly, if you'd like to explore the less-traveled paths, head south from Kazimierz. Your first stop should be Mięćmierz, an old raftsman settlement dating back to the Middle Ages. You can still see traditional thatched cottages, a well with a manual pump, and a historical windmill here. Climb Albrechtówka for a breathtaking view of the river valley and nature reserve "Krowia Wyspa."

Further south, consider the Grodziska nad Chodelka blue trail, which takes you through four Slavic settlements dating back to the 8th to 10th century. The reconstructed small settlement in Żmijowiska is worth a halt during your biking trip. Though the other sites might require an archaeologist's keen eye to appreciate, the trail in its entirety is worth riding.

Opole Lubelskie doesn't have a train station, so you'll have to ride to Nałęczów, Puławy, or consider a longer trip back to the other side of the Vistula river. In between Janowiec and Dęblin, you'll find an empty paved road especially between Solec nad Wisłą and Janowiec - perfect for those who appreciate a swift ride!

Beyond these trails, explore additional routes like the trip to Wola Uhruska, or bike around Nałęczów to visit the La'Lawenda Lavender Plantation and Magiczne Ogrody Janowiec.

So, gear up, and let the adventure begin! The scenic vistas and rich history of Lublin Voivodeship await you!
