Exploring Berlin on Foot: Three Unforgettable Routes

Berlin, a city rich in history and culture, offers an abundance of sights to see and experiences to enjoy. For those who prefer to explore on foot, there are three recommended routes that take you through the heart of the city, revealing its key landmarks and hidden gems.

The first route, the Berlin Wall Trail (Berliner Mauerweg), is a historic journey through the city, providing insights into Berlin's past events. The trail leads you from Checkpoint Charlie to the East Side Gallery, where a portion of the original Berlin Wall is preserved as an open-air gallery showcasing international works of art.

The second route takes you to the Grunewald area, a haven of tranquillity amidst the city's hustle and bustle. Here, you'll find extensive forest paths, natural landmarks like Teufelsberg, and the Havel river. This route is perfect for those seeking a more serene and natural experience.

The third route, our focus today, starts from Alexanderplatz, a must-see spot in Berlin, after the Brandenburg Gate. The route extends the distance, running along the Spree River for 4 km, reaching the club der Visionäre. The journey then heads north to Mauerpark, a popular spot with graffiti artists, basketball players, picnickers, and a small farm with various animals.

From Mauerpark, the route continues northwest to Tempelhofer Park, the former Berlin airport converted into a vast wasteland for runners, cyclists, picnickers, and music lovers. The park's exit leads to Weinbergspark, a small green oasis with a pond, an Italian restaurant, and a rose garden.

After Weinbergspark, the route heads west to Treptower Park, running up to its Soviet Memorial (Sowjetisches Ehrenmal Treptow) and then heading back up along the Görlitzer Park. Spree River and Treptower Park, along with Tempelhofer Park, make up a 13 km route.

For marathon enthusiasts, Tempelhofer Park is also the bib pick-up point for the marathon, making it an even more significant stop on this route. Another noteworthy point of interest in Treptower Park is the Volkspark Friedrichshain, which features a fairy tale fountain (Märchenbrunnen) and allows for a bit of elevation, with two hidden hills offering panoramic views of the city (48 m and 78 m high).

These three routes provide an excellent way to explore Berlin on foot, allowing you to visit key sights, immerse yourself in the city's history, and enjoy its natural beauty. Whether you're a seasoned runner or a casual stroller, these routes offer something for everyone. So, lace up your shoes and set off on an adventure through the heart of Berlin!
