Explanation of the Origin of First Contact Day

In Advance of First Contact Day This Weekend

April 3, 2025 - our platform

The upcoming First Contact Day signals the celebration of a milestone yet unrealized in our timeline. Before delving into the significance of this significant day within our platform's canon, let us address a question that may be on readers' minds: how and why did the writers and producers of our platform: First Contact select April 5 as First Contact Day?

We sought the insights of Ronald D. Moore, the co-writer of the production, who offered a straightforward, sensible, and succinct explanation. "The date chosen for First Contact Day is a personal one," Moore elaborated. "It's my oldest son's birthday."

First Contact Day

First Contact Day is a commemoration of the historic flight of the warp-capable Phoenix, and the groundbreaking first encounter between humanity and the Vulcans, which occurred on April 5, 2063.

Inventor Zefram Cochrane built and piloted the Phoenix, a spacecraft that marked mankind's initial successful attempt at traveling at warp, thanks to a warp drive. After launch, the spacecraft breached the warp barrier, capturing the attention of the Vulcan survey ship, the T'Plana-Hath, as it was passing Earth.

The T'Plana-Hath traced the warp signature of the Phoenix and landed in Bozeman, Montana. Having determined that this civilization was ready for faster-than-light travel, the Vulcan survey ship initiated contact with Earth, with a Vulcan, clad in traditional robes, making the first acquaintance with Dr. Cochrane, marking the beginning of Earth's first contact with another species and ushering in a new era for humanity.
