New study reveals connection between sleep habits and asthma

New research suggests that sleep habits may influence the occurrence of asthma, especially in individuals with a genetic predisposition. Published in BMJ Open Breath Research, the study aimed to determine if sleep patterns could impact an individual's likelihood of developing asthma.

"We've always known that there's a link between asthma and sleep, but most of the work has focused on obstructive sleep apnea," said Dr. Amal Assa'ad, a pediatric allergologist and vice chair of the department of Allergy and Immunology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. She was not involved in the study.

To explore this connection, researchers analyzed data from over 450,000 participants in the UK Biobank, a large biomedical database and research resource that follows residents over time. The participants ranged in age from 38 to 73.

The study found that individuals with a genetic predisposition and poor sleep habits were twice as likely to develop asthma compared to those with a lower genetic risk.

Fortunately, good sleep habits have been shown to be beneficial, regardless of genetic predisposition. "Healthy sleep patterns are associated with a lower risk of asthma," said Dr. Juanita Mora, an allergologist and immunologist in Chicago. She was not involved in the study.

Researchers also suggested that addressing and treating sleep disorders could help prevent asthma in some cases. They noted that 19% of asthma cases could be prevented by improving sleep quality.

Mora added that the findings indicated that doctors and healthcare providers should discuss sleep habits more with asthma patients to better understand how their behavior might impact their symptoms.

Better sleep is good for everyone

Dr. Amal Assa'ad, a pediatric allergologist at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, explained that the key to understanding the study's findings was understanding the interplay between genetics and behavior.

She noted that the researchers had examined all the minute genetic variations that could increase the risk of developing asthma. These markers and genetic risks are collectively known as the polygenic risk score of an individual.

However, Assa'ad pointed out that most people are unaware of their genetic risk score for asthma, only knowing the severity of their symptoms. Mora suggested that individuals could follow their triggers and exacerbators (of which sleep is one) to better manage their asthma.

She added that the study's findings emphasized the importance of good sleep hygiene for everyone, regardless of their asthma genetics.

Research suggests that the reason why sleep is crucial for asthma control and prevention may be due to inflammation. Asthma is generally considered a chronic inflammatory condition.

Previous studies have shown that sleep duration and sleep problems are associated with chronic inflammation.

Sleep disorders are also linked to chronic activation of stress responses, some of which are crucial for the development of asthma.

Good sleep hygiene

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults get at least seven hours of sleep per night.

However, the CDC notes that one-third of Americans do not get enough sleep.

Avoiding large meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime, as well as engaging in regular physical activity during the day, can help improve sleep quality.

Creating a routine to prepare for sleep, such as taking a warm bath, reading a book, or meditating, can also help signal to the brain that it's time to relax and sleep.

If none of these changes improves sleep quality, it may be time to consult a healthcare professional.
