Flu Season Looms Over Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
Gear up for the winter, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania residents, because health professionals are bracing for an uptick in flu cases, likely arriving in December. SPD's Health Minister Stefanie Drese shared her concerns during a meeting in Schwerin, acknowledging the impact of COVID-19 but stressing that the flu season is yet to fully unfurl.
Recent respiratory illness statistics from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania reveal a slight dip in cases last week compared to previous weeks. Nonetheless, health officials, keeping a close eye on the situation through the acute respiratory diseases evaluation (ARE), anticipate a spike in flu cases coming our way.
The acute respiratory diseases survey reveals that roughly 30% of recent infections are the result of Sars-CoV-2 pathogens. Cold viruses, on the other hand, accounted for 17% of infections, as expected for this time of year. Interestingly, the flu seems to be playing a minor role, contributing only 0.6% of infections.
So, despite the decline in the overall number of respiratory infections last week, health professionals remain cautious about the looming flu season. The low percentage of flu-related infections thus far isn't a reason for comfort—on the contrary, it highlights the importance of staying vigilant and prepared.
