Knut Sierk, head of the Forest Fire Control Center in Lüneburg, has stated that the index has shot up today, causing concern. The high-risk area for forest fires in Lower Saxony stretches from the Lüneburg Heath to the Polish border, with pine trees, which prefer dry locations, dominating.
Forests adjacent to farmland in Lower Saxony are particularly endangered due to the current weather conditions. The mineral soil in Lower Saxony's forest soils is not moistened, despite the presence of humus, and the water reserves in the forest soils are not sufficiently filled.
The delayed harvest due to persistent drought has led to an abundance of dry vegetation, further increasing the risk of forest fires. In fact, the Forest Fire Control Center is currently monitoring an area of 440,000 hectares of forest with a level 3 out of 5.
Hundreds of reports are received daily from the 17 Lower Saxony locations, indicating that the risk of forest fires is not limited to the northeast of the state but extends across many parts. The total area under surveillance by the Forest Fire Control Center is almost one million hectares, and the center will be continuously staffed in the coming days.
