The German Sports Hall of Fame is undergoing a significant overhaul, with updates to biographies, discussions about renaming, and a review of potential misconduct during the Nazi era.

A five-member historian commission, appointed by the German Olympic Sports Confederation, the German Sports Aid Foundation, and the Association of German Sports Journalists, has been tasked with conducting this comprehensive review. The commission is led by Erik Eggers, a renowned sports historian recognised for his work in German sports history.

The commission's mandate includes examining the Hall of Fame for any misconduct during the Nazi era and defining clear rules for future admissions. These rules will include a commitment to democratic principles and a strict stance against doping.

The current count stands at 131 members, including athletes, coaches, and officials, who are part of the Hall of Fame. However, public criticism has surfaced regarding the selection of some members due to possible connections to the Nazi Party.

In response to this, Jutta Braun, historian and head of the department at the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History Potsdam, has stated that research and biographies should be updated accordingly. She also emphasised that concealing the political entanglements of sports would lead to an expulsion from the Hall of Fame.

However, the expert group investigating the Hall of Fame found no reason to expel the 15 members currently in the Hall. Journalist and historian Erik Eggers, who led the investigation, saw arguments for the expulsion of three members due to violations of the Hall of Fame's guidelines. Yet, no expulsion procedure will be initiated as per the recommendation of the scientists.

In addition to the review and potential expulsions, the Hall of Fame's biographies will be updated with new findings, following the model of the processing of biographies from the Nazi era in the Federal Chancellery. The virtual representations on the internet will also be supplemented with additional information.

Interestingly, unlike American models, admission to the German Sports Hall of Fame is not solely based on sporting achievements. Instead, it also considers the societal role model function of the individuals being inducted.

The possibility of renaming the Hall of Fame is being discussed, with the debate stemming from further historical research. As of now, no decision has been made regarding a name change.

This comprehensive review and update of the German Sports Hall of Fame aim to ensure transparency, integrity, and a commitment to democratic principles, setting a new standard for sports history and recognition in Germany.
